Is it possible that Gill Sans (from Word) and Gill Sans MT (from PS) are one and the same and Word just 'simplifies' the name in its font list? I believe the MT just refers to Monotype - the company that originally developed Gill Sans. If they are different, then the font file has to be somewhere on your hard drive. Do a search for 'gil.ttf' to see if it (or they - there will be more than one) show up somewhere else than 'C: WINDOWS Fonts' (although that's where they're supposed to be according to the link in Doctor Olds' response). If the file(s) do exist somewhere else on your hard drive, then the font can be installed to make it available to all apps. Use the Fonts Control Panel applet.
Mac OS X includes five font folders that allow you to use fonts in different ways. If fonts have duplicate names, Mac OS X uses fonts—without regard to font format—from the following locations in the order listed.
Thanks for the responses. Following are some screenshots which I believe clearly demonstrate the problem. They each show a sample of text from a Word (2013) document with the same text displayed in Outlook (2010) as a control. Note that the screenshots indicate whether or not the option to, 'Use subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen' is checked. Also note that the font has been changed to demonstrate that that is not the issue. By the way, I have also attached the Word doc file used in these screenshots. Hi We.Toad, I downloaded your three images, cropped just a few words, from each, and put them together — makes for an interesting comparison.
Here's the first image (comic sans, use subpixel on): Word 2013 is on top, Outlook 2010 on the bottom. The dithering (anti-aliasing) is different, and especially noticeable when you click on the thumbnail to view the enlarged image.
I then did some web research and discovered that it is a known problem in Office 2013. Here's an interesting link: Note its reference to this even more interesting discussion: Although the last one talks about W8, it also says, 'It is particularly bad in IE10 and Office 2013.' You may have run across something that doesn't have a fix — until our friends at Microsoft fix it. Regards, Joe.
I request that we give the Author more time to respond. I have participated in his questions for several years and know him to be an upstanding member of the EE community (although his WeThotUWasAToad is a relatively new account, he posted under a different account for many years). He is not the sort of member who abandons questions. In fact, just the opposite — he is very responsive, as well as articulate and thoughtful. It's possible that his lack of response on this question is due to an issue out of his control. I'm confident that he'll respond when he is able to do so. Please keep it open.
